NPD Takes Over ACNielsen Canada's IT Tracking

Just weeks after its purchase of Display Search, US retail specialist the NPD Group has acquired ACNielsen's IT tracking business in Canada. NPD will now provide both retail and commercial sales tracking of computers and peripherals in Canada, as it does in the US.

ACNielsen Canada President Pat Gardiner says his company had decided that the IT tracking business was 'not a good long-term fit with our strategic plan'. He points out that it formed only a small part of the company's business in Canada, with far more emphasis on CPG sales tracking and analysis, and consumer insights through its Homescan consumer panel.

NPD CEO Tod Johnson says the transaction 'continues the vision of NPD, along with its global partner GfK of being the gold standard for retail and commercial market information for the IT industry'. The company plans to enhance its retailer panel in Canada.

The two companies say they will work closely together to ensure that clients' needs are met during the transition period.

As well as its recent acquisition of flat panel display specialist Display Search, NPD is in the process of acquiring TNS Infratest's Italian perfumery business. In another deal, TNS Secodip is exiting the French selective beauty tracking business - a core area for NPD.

The companies are online at www.npd.com and www.acnielsen.ca.
