UK Confidence Perks Up

UK consumers are considerably more positive about the economy and their own personal finances since last month, but still a lot less so than a year ago, according to the GfK NOP UK Consumer Confidence Survey for April. The overall index rose three points to -4.

Last year at this time the index stood at 0. This month's rise has has been driven by increases in four of the five measures. The major purchases measure bucked the trend but fell only one point to +11.

The other four are:
  • opinions regarding the development of personal finances over the last twelve months - up five points since March to +1.
  • expectations for the development of personal finances over the next year - up seven points to +14 and now four points higher than a year ago.
  • opinions regarding the general economic situation of the country over the last twelve months - up two to -28 but still well below the -13 recorded in April 2005
  • perceptions of the outlook for the general economic situation over the next twelve months, up two to -18, but again well down on April 2005's -6.
GfK NOP interviewed 2011 individuals aged 16+ on behalf of the European Commission, between 31st March and 23rd April. The company is online at www.gfk.com .
