Cathy Marlow Accused Pleads Not Guilty to Murder

American Matthew Fagan, accused of killing Research Now Finance Manager Cathy Marlow, pleaded not guilty to the murder at the Old Bailey in London on Friday. His trial will now commence in the last week of February next year.

Fagan, 31, married and unemployed, appeared via a video link and appeared confident, according to reporters. Confusion arose over his plea relating to theft of laptops and Ms Marlow's handbag. Initially saying he wished to plead guilty to aggravated burglary, Fagan was told this was not allowed as he was effectively upgrading from the less serious charge actually brought (burglary). He then admitted burglary of six laptops but denied taking the handbag, whereupon presiding Judge Giles Forrester gave the defence until this Friday (July 27th) to sort out the plea.

Cathy Marlow, from Hawke's Bay in New Zealand, was working at Research Now's South London office on Saturday, January 13th this year when the killing occurred. She was found strangled in a shower cubicle.

The trial is expected to last around three weeks. Cathy Marlow's family are expected to attend but were not present at Friday's hearing.
