DisplaySearch to Track DVDs and Smaller Screens

Flat panel technology specialist DisplaySearch is to begin tracking the DVD sector, and has hired Paul Erickson to lead this unit. Takao Tsukahara also joins, with a remit to expand the firm's research into small and medium display markets.

The firm says the shift in consumer tastes towards HD displays, combined with anticipated falls in prices, makes the move to track the devices and services that fuel this market a logical one; and that expanding small/medium display coverage will allow it to begin regional tracking of major handheld applications including mobile phones, navigation devices, cameras and games. It will also move beyond standard displays and cover touch technology and industrial applications.

Erickson, who becomes Director of DVD and High Definition (HD) Market Research, brings eight years of strategic and competitive intelligence analysis experience in the technology sector. His role will cover standard and next-generation DVD players (including game consoles), recorders, HD digital set-top boxes and HD pay-TV services.

Most recently, he was an analyst at IMS Research, and before that he worked in the Market Intelligence group at IBM/Tivoli Systems and the Competitive Intelligence group at Vignette Corporation. He holds a bachelor's degree in international business from Georgetown University and a master's in marketing from the University of Texas at Austin.

Tsukahara joins as Deputy Director for Small/Medium Market Display Research. He has more than 30 years' experience from various editor and reporter roles in key IT and electronics publications in Japan, Europe and the US, most recently as the chief editor at Japan's Information Business magazine. He received his bachelor's degree in German literature and language at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan.

Ross Young, the firm's founder and President, comments: 'We are excited to offer expanded coverage in key market segments such as DVDs and small medium displays. Paul and Tsukahara-san both bring a wealth of knowledge to their new respective roles at DisplaySearch.'

The firm is part of the NPD Group and is online at www.displaysearch.com. It has a core team of 46 employees located in Europe, North America and Asia and is headquartered in Austin, Texas.
