Language Logic and ISTI to Improve Verbatim Coding

US translation and transcription technology firm Language Logic is to integrate the Verbatim Coding System (VCS) and text categorisation software developed by Italian body ISTI into its own verbatim management system, Ascribe.

Language Logic has been providing online verbatim coding tools since 2000 and its Ascribe application is currently used to process more than 12 million verbatim responses each month, in many languages.

ISTI (the Institute of Information Science and Technologies) is based in Pisa, Italy and is part of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Its Senior Research Scientist Dr Fabrizio Sebastiani will work alongside Language Logic developers to further hone the institute's VCS automatic learning, text coding and opinion mining techniques.

Sebastiani explained: 'The wide acceptance that Ascribe enjoys within the worldwide survey research industry and the strong sense of community that Language Logic has built within its user base, make this an exciting opportunity for us to improve the effectiveness, functionality and usability of VCS through continuous interaction with this community.'

Language Logic's Chief Technical Officer Charles Baylis responded by saying that while VCS does not replace the human coder, it greatly enhances the coder's efforts. 'What sets this technology apart from any other we have evaluated is its ability to learn by example. This means that no skills are required to operate the software other than the coding skills users of Ascribe already have.'
