IMS Health Joins Academics in Consortium

In the US, pharma research giant IMS Health has joined with ten academic researchers to establish the Health Services Research Network (HSRN), to conduct detailed, national-level studies of key health services and their outcomes.

IMS says that the alliance represents a new way of conducting collaborative research among medical and academic researchers and the private sector. The partners comprise researchers in medicine, health economics and public health and member institutions will be provided with access to IMS's information on healthcare therapies and outcomes.

Randall Stafford of the Stanford Prevention Research Center at Stanford University said that the research will provide 'vital solutions to the cost and quality challenges facing the US healthcare system'.

Five HSRN projects are already underway, focused on healthcare topics that include pediatric treatment outcomes, benchmarks of hospital drug costs, drug safety in key therapeutic classes, variability in treatment patterns, and how quickly the public accepts new medical technology.

Commented IMS Chairman and CEO David Carlucci: 'The consortium brings together a world-class team to focus on some of today's most pressing healthcare issues. By leveraging our extensive information assets, these experts can help move us all closer to a more unified approach to improving treatment of patients, measuring quality of care and managing costs.'

Operating in more than 100 countries, IMS Health is online at www.imshealth.com .

Last week, the firm announced that it had finished the first quarter with 13% revenue growth to $574m, on the back of its 'aggressive' restructuring actions.
