Gannett Snaps Up Ripple6

US newspaper and magazine publisher Gannett has acquired social media services firm Ripple6 to expand its digital business and enhance its core operation. Terms were not disclosed.

Ripple6's social platform enables advertisers to engage with social network users through 'cloud communities' - allowing them to create content that can be distributed and commented on by users.

In addition, its Ripple Analytics software allows brands to create private groups for targeted consumers, for market research purposes. This tool can then be used to measure user engagement through demographic and psychographic analysis tracking, and uncover which information appeals to communities and how it is shared.

Gannett has worked with the firm for the past two years to develop its local 'MomsLikeMe' sites, dedicated to infant care.

'We think that businesses like this are a great way to build Gannett's digital portfolio,' said Josh Resnik, VP Strategy and Business operations for Gannett Digital.

New York-based Ripple6 will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gannett, and will continue offer its social media technology and analytics not only to Gannett, but also to an array of marketers and web publishers.

'We get the best of both worlds here,' said Sang Kim, CEO of Ripple6. 'We'll take advantage of the synergy and resources of our new parent, yet we'll maintain the independence that helps generate innovative solutions for marketers and publishers.'
