Headsets to Read Minds

In the US, bio-sensor equipment firm NeuroSky has launched brainwave-reading (EEG) and mental state assessment technology for a wireless Bluetooth headset that operates with most PCs.

The NeuroSky MindSetThe new MindSet headset resembles a pair of headphones with an electrode-laden arm that is in contact with the user's forehead. This reads the electrical potentials found on the skin's surface and induced by the neuron activity occurring in the frontal lobe of the user's brain.

Various 'mental states', for example a user's level of focus and relaxation, can be deciphered from the brainwave patterns.

By measuring these brainwaves, the headset can send messages to the user's PC, allowing them to control certain functions with their thoughts. MindSet can be paired with video games, research devices or a number of other tools.

The first of such headsets will be available in June, with roll out into select international markets planned for later this year. It will initially be accompanied by two instructional videos, Brainwave Visualizer and NeuroBoy's Adventure.

CEO Stanley Yang described the launch as 'an important beachhead for brainwave-reading technology within the PC community'. Toshiba Corporation is planning to launch its own headset integrating the technology.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in San Jose, CA, NeuroSky's products offer opportunities for developers to create applications in markets as diverse as market research, consumer electronics, health & wellness, education & training, and others.
