First Japanese Internet Measurement Results

Media Metrix Japan has released its first Japanese audience measurement results. According to the results, Yahoo! ranked number one in April 2000 with 9.8 million unique visitors, followed by @Nifty, an ISP, with over 8.4 million unique visitors. Japanese online shopping site, Rakuten, also ranked among the top sites in April with over 4.5 million unique visitors and a ranking of number nine.

The results show a total universe of 16.4m Internet users in Japan in the first three months of the year, representing 13.3% of the total Japanese population. Usage is skewed towards males (63%) versus females at 37%. There are 14 million Japanese now using the Internet at home. The survey also reveals a total cell phone user base of 1.8 million in Japan.
