New Car Prices Set to Drop According to Motorists
16/6/00

Exactly three-quarters of motorists believe that new car prices in Britain will be substantially reduced soon, according to the findings of a recent survey from NOP Automotive.

The survey also found that 23% of drivers nationally, peaking at 29% in London, have delayed buying a new car while waiting for prices to come down. Furthermore, 4% of British motorists say that they have already bought a brand new car abroad and arranged for it to be imported into Britain.

Equally, 43% of motorists who have not bought a brand new car abroad say that they would consider doing so, a figure that rises to 55% among motorists in London.

Almost half of all drivers (47%) have access to the Internet and, of these, a quarter (23%) report that the medium has been helpful in finding their next car purchase.

According to Chris Buck, director of NOP Automotive, "The very public debate about the price of new cars in Britain has clearly not gone unnoticed by the motorist, who now has very definite expectations of a substantial drop in new car prices in this country. If this is not forthcoming, significant numbers of motorists look to be perfectly prepared to buy a new car abroad."

NOP interviewed a nationally representative sample of 506 principal drivers by telephone between 26 and 28 May 2000.
