New findings on American political leanings
25/10/00

American research company Media Metrix has just released some striking new findings concerning Americans and their current political and voting behaviour. This is part of the company’s ongoing Election 2000 series of surveys, which also contains key US demographic characterics of visitors to political websites.

Overall the research shows that nearly 90 percent of all web users aged 18 and older plan to vote in total in this year’s US elections. This compares well to the level of just over half of all adults who reported voting in US federal, state or local elections in 1999. In addition, the findings show that over two fifths of men online are registered as Republicans, and that American men constitute the majority of visitors to all available political websites.

Other highlights from the latest research include the fact that Americans age 50 and older represent the most politically-inclined group online at over 96 percent planning to vote in 2000. In terms of all the US presidential candidate websites, it appears that www.georgewbush.com and www.Algore2000.com draw a nearly equal percentage of their traffic from persons from the lowest and the highest household incomes. And looked at by visitor numbers, Georgewbush.com and Algore2000.com achieved 467,000 and 350,000 unique visitors during August 2000, respectively.
