Increased affluence in Latin America, says research
25/10/00

New research from the Strategy Research Corporation in Miami USA is due for release in the form of the forthcoming 2001 Latin American Market Planning Report. The findings show that, for the year 2000, there is a total population of approx. 500 million Latin Americans worldwide. By 2050, this figure is set to increase by 60 percent to 800 million.

The findings also indicate that the overall proportion of young Latin Americans that are employed is growing rapidly. This is largely a result of two factors; ie a decline in the fertility rate and a relatively small population of older adults.

This current demographic structure presents a substantial commercial opportunity, based on underlying increases in average household buying power. The survey estimates that the actual total Latin America household income is in the region of $1 trillion. However, this situation could well change by 2050, given projected changes in the size of the Latin American working-age population and the number of older adults.

Greater detail of this and other findings will be discussed at SRC’s seminar on November 9th 2000. This includes debate on Latin American consumer profiles for the three largest economies (ie Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico), media usage, phone penetration, e-commerce, consumer attitudes and public opinion.
