First Quarter Revenues Rise by 29% at Harris Interactive
2/11/2000

Harris Interactive has reported revenues of US$12.1 million for its fiscal first quarter ended September 30, 2000. This represents an increase of 29% for the quarter when compared with $9.4 million reported for the first quarter of fiscal 2000.

Internet revenues, an essential driver of the company's growth, again expanded in the first quarter to US$7.0 million. This is an increase of 155% compared with the first quarter of fiscal 2000. Internet revenues represented 58% of the total revenue for the quarter. According to Dr. Gordon S. Black, chairman and CEO of Harris Interactive, "We are clearly pleased with the larger than expected amount of Internet revenue we booked during the historically slow summer months. Our Internet-based research is now the main driver of revenue and profit for Harris Interactive, and its growth during the first quarter was higher than we anticipated". For the quarter, the company’s total number of Internet-based research clients expanded from 363 at the end of fiscal 2000 to 425, representing an increase of over 17%. Business backlog for the Internet, a key indicator of going forward revenues, increased on a quarter-to-quarter basis from US$8.2 million at the end of June to US$8.6 million. Traditional business backlog during the same period declined from US$9.8 million at the end of the last quarter to US$7.7 million. This decrease in traditional business backlog is a natural consequence of the transition to Internet-based market research. Harris Interactive has forged two new relationships designed to increase the company's ability to conduct market research on a global basis. These are the Planet Project Global Poll, as reported on by MrWeb last week, and an agreement with Japanese ad giant Dentsu to expand Internet based research capabilities in Japan.
