ORC’s New "Deep Search" Engine
29/3/01

Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) has launched its "fourth generation" specialised search engine. Aimed at finding enterprise development issues within the world’s developing countries, it rigorously and intelligently searches all possible sites before posting only the most appropriate.

The new type of search engine, also known as the "Deep Search" engine, has been created specifically for the non-profit and governmental sectors. It is powered by dynamic systems that automatically update the myriad of available materials found at each site. All sites are searchable in several languages, including English, Spanish and French.

According to John F. Short, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, "This emerging capability is exciting from a number of perspectives. From the point of view of our clients, we are thrilled that we can provide them with world-class technology that cuts across global borders and languages. This capability also complements our e-Insight suite of Internet-based services, which brings our technological services in line with our traditional research services."

The technology was created by Social & Health Services, Ltd., the health marketing communications subsidiary of ORC. To date, the company has also created a number of products including a site for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. This enables users to find articles on the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use. It has also produced a Web guide containing more than 21,000 articles that parents can use to help their children with schoolwork called parentsmart.com. The company’s latest project is the newly designed EnterpriseSearch, a powerful, first-of-its-kind search engine for information on efforts to fight poverty and promote sustainable development in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
