Europeans Favouring the Net at Home
3/4/01

The amount of time Europeans are spending on the Internet from home has increased significantly over the last nine months. This is according to the latest research findings from Jupiter MMXI.

The latest figures detail that, not only more are more people logging on to the net from home every month, but they are also using it more and more each month. In Europe’s biggest Internet markets (ie UK, France and Germany ) the total monthly time online increased by 94% (UK), 225% (France) and 226% (Germany) between June 2000 and February 2001. The average time spent online per unique visitor per month was also highest in Germany (more than 13 hours), followed by Spain (more than 9 hours), Norway (9 hours) and Italy (8 hours).

The new research also reveals European’s favourite Net destinations. Over the survey period, almost 60% of Europe’s at home online population visited entertainment sites, such as Windowsmedia.com, RTL.de and MP3.com. Retail sites, including the single Amazon sites, Bol.de and CDNOW.com, were also very popular, with 46% reach in Europe. Europeans online are also increasingly getting used to handling their finances online. Business & finance sites, such as Lloydstsb.com, EGG.com and Comdirect.de were visited by 36% of the European online population.

Staffan Engdegard, advertising analyst at Jupiter MMXI, commented that, "The tremendous growth of time spent online by European consumers, together with a steady increase in the number of Internet users, confirms that the Internet itself is not affected by the current financial issues some dotcoms are facing. The softening Internet advertising market is primarily a result of the financial reality catching up with dotcom’s extravagant spending.
