App Annie Buys Rival Distimo, Raises New Funds

App store analytics and market intelligence specialist App Annie has made its first acquisition, buying Amsterdam-based rival Distimo for an undisclosed amount of cash and equity. App Annie has also raised $17m in a new round of funding.

Bertrand  SchmittBased in San Francisco and with additional offices in Beijing, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong, App Annie provides app ranking data and mobile analytics, including app store download, sales and other data for iOS & Android. Dutch firm Distimo, which has additional offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Seoul and Tokyo, tracks more than 3.2 billion downloads per quarter for more than 260,000 apps on all major app stores.

Through the acquisition, App Annie says it brings together the 'best brains in the mobile app data space', to help expand its product roadmap and platform for analysing the mobile app ecosystem. As part of the deal, Distimo's founders will take key roles in the team and its Netherlands HQ will become App Annie's European R&D center. In addition, the Distimo team will be integrated into App Annie's global offices, bringing the total team size to 240 employees worldwide.

App Annie has also raised $17m from existing investors IDG Capital Partners, Greycroft Partners and Sequoia Capital, and the new investment is being used in part to fund the Distimo acquisition, as well as for product development, marketing and market development. To date, App Annie has raised $39m in investment funding, including $15m last September.
