Stephen CarterInformation services giant Informa has appointed former UK government Minister Stephen Carter as an independent Non-Executive Director, and a member of its Audit Committee.

Informa owns online database and analysis firm Datamonitor, which last year integrated its three technology research brands – Butler Group, Datamonitor Technology and Ovum – under the Ovum name.

As well as its research arm, Informa organises conference and courses and publishes subscription-based journals, real-time news and structured databases of commercial intelligence. The group has around 150 offices in over 40 countries and employs approximately 8,000 staff around the world.

Carter is currently Chief Marketing, Strategy & Communication Officer and SVP at Alcatel-Lucent, prior to which he served in the UK Government as Minister for Communications, Technology & Broadcasting, where he was the author of the Digital Britain Report.

Before this, he held a variety of senior executive roles in the media and telecoms industries including CEO of Ofcom, MD of NTL and CEO of J Walter Thompson UK and the Brunswick Group.

In addition, he is past Chairman of the Marketing Group of Great Britain, and has served on the Board of a number of companies. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Ashridge Business School.

‘The Board is extremely pleased that Stephen is joining us,’ said Informa Chairman Derek Mapp. ‘His breadth of experience, both in terms of his career generally, and in relation to the media industry specifically, will bring new insights to, and strengthen overall, Informa's Board.’
