Q.   I've only been in my current role, as a Research Associate with a major organization, for about 6 months but I've had enough - I'm treated like a number and the salary stinks. I've asked my manager if we can talk about it but he keeps putting me off. I only stayed in my previous position for a year - will it look bad on my résumé if I leave this job now?

A.   Karen Morgan says: Yes, it will look bad if you leave this quickly and I wouldn't recommend resigning, it never reflects well on you, whatever the circumstances. 6 months is not very long. Be patient! My advice is to bide your time. Everyone starts in a role where they feel they are doing a lot of grunt work and don't have much visibility, however, it takes time to earn people's respect. I would work hard and take as much initiative as possible, this is the best way to start getting noticed. Asking to talk to your boss after 6 months is probably a little premature. It also depends very much on how you approach it. If you are offering to take on a particular project, help out other people in the group etc. you may get more of a response. But if your boss feels that you are just going to whine, he isn't going to want to hear it! It's good to take the initiative, as you are the one who needs to be managing your career; however, it's important to go about it from a positive angle. Offer to take something on that you know will take the load off your boss/your team. Or don't even ask; just take the initiative (without stepping on anyone else's toes, of course!).

Phil Reeve says: Yes. If you leave now your resume will look bad. One job for one year then 6 months is a bad idea. Salary isn’t everything to start, experience and a company that people recognize will take you far. You should not worry about more money 6 months into a job. You should worry about learning and taking on more responsibility so they have to pay you more!
