New codeit Adds AI 'Throughout', Keeps Humans in Control

British MR software company Digital Taxonomy has announced the biggest update in ten years for its verbatim coding suite, codeit. The ground-up rewrite, developed in partnership with users, includes a complete rebuild of the coding screen and expanded AI Assistance throughout.

Digital Taxonomy was founded in 2016 and launched codeit the following year. codeit integrates directly with major survey platforms, and is one of the true pioneers in bringing AI and Machine Learning to bear on verbatim data. Nevertheless its authors have always regarded 'keeping the researcher in control of the coding process' as one of the platform's core strengths.

On its blog, the company sets out this belief in more detail: 'Researchers have to make judgements about nuance, context, terminology and relevance. They need to decide whether subtly different responses belong under the same theme, whether a coarse theme needs to be split, where codes overlap, and whether an unexpected result warrants further investigation. The AI can help with all of this: but the researcher should be the one making the decisions.'

In keeping with this, the firm says the new release is focused on giving researchers 'even more control over how they work alongside AI' - providing 'AI assistance, not an AI autopilot.' Additional AI features in the latest version include smart theme-splitting, semantic AI search, and duplicate-theme detection, with the researcher always making the final call. The new coding screen takes advantage of the latest web tech and allows loading and comparing of verbatims from different waves, tasks or projects without leaving, as well as more precise filtering and search, including range-based filters. Codeframe editing has been simplified, and now offers built-in codeframe translations; and the release features a configurable display and Dark Mode for customised layouts.

All users have access to the new functionality straight away, and the firm says more enhancements are planned for early 2027.
