With such a developed consumer society, high level of geographic isolation and very small population, New Zealand is a really unique market in which to work in the research industry.
It's a market where budgets are tight, but the smaller scale of operations means that you have huge access to decision-makers, and a real opportunity to bring research into strategic business planning. With a lot of our clients we work directly on determining how we can use insights to really move their business forward.
After years of working in bigger markets like UK and Europe it's exciting and refreshing to have such visibility on how we are contributing, and also a sense that you are really making a difference.
The only thing to watch out for is the "1 degree of separation" that comes with living in such a small country (if Kevin Bacon was here, he'd be married to your cousin), so there's a good chance you'll run into a focus group respondent, or someone from yesterday's planning meeting, next time you're out having a quiet beer! It comes with the territory.
The general approach to business in New Zealand is informal, friendly and relaxed, and people tend to speak their minds directly. This means less bureaucracy and an opportunity to develop fantastic relationships with both colleagues and clients.
It makes for a nice market to work in and interesting consumers to understand.
