McGowan Returns to Discovery Channel

In the US, Nielsen executive Steve McGowan is to return to the Discovery Channel as Senior Vice President of Research, in charge of directing all broadcast, digital media, marketing, ancillary and other types of research.

Steve McGowanMcGowan has been at Nielsen since 2003, working as SVP Insights and Client Research Initiatives. During this time, he focused on the measurement of Digital Video Recorders and Video on Demand, and tracking usage of portable media devices. He also oversaw the 'Audience Insights' working group, which was charged with uncovering local and national findings about TV and media use.

He previously spent 13 years at Discovery Communications, directing primary and secondary research. He began his career as a Research Associate at the National Association of Broadcasters, and later worked as Research Manager for the Public Broadcasting Service. He has a BA and MA in Telecommunications from Michigan State University, and an MBA from The George Washington University.

'Steve's experience and instincts will increase our analytical research focus on audience trends and better strengthen our development process and advertising opportunities. It's wonderful to have him back in the Discovery family,' said President and General Manager, John Ford, to whom McGowan will report.

The Discovery Channel reaches 98.1 million viewers in the US and can be seen in more than 170 countries.
