House Agrees Health Survey Funding

July 27 2009

In the US, the House of Representatives has approved $138.7m in funding for the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys for next year - an increase of around $1 million on the 2009 figure.

The unit sits within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and conducts a number of nationwide annual studiess of health and wellbeing, including the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).

The House said the funding would 'support the collection of vital statistics data' and that the increase would be offset by a $1 million decrease to funding for HHS General Departmental Management.

The funding formed part of the 2010 Labour-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill and was made available under section 241 of the PHS Act, which also decreed $12.8m for National Immunization Surveys; $47.4m for Public Health Informatics; $47.0m for Health Marketing; $31.2m for Public Health Research; and $91.7m for 'research activities within the National Occupational Research Agenda'.
