Nielsen Announces End of Live-Only TV Ratings

Following client consultation, Nielsen is to move to live-program-plus-same-day ratings in its Local People Meter (LPM) and Set Meter markets by early December.

The firm says that on average, 63% of playback occurs on the same day that a program is recorded, and that a significant amount of playback occurs within a very short period of time on the same day.

Nielsen's 'Live + Same Day' stream will become the primary stream of data in LPM and Set Meter markets. In addition, there will be other streams available - some in overnights and TVS (the tools primarily used for buying and selling); others via custom analysis.

Live-only program ratings data will be eliminated, and instead live program plus same day DVR playback viewing measurement will be used as the standard data available overnight.

While the firm says its local TV clients are unanimously supporting the proposal, it is encouraging them to comment, and will also be speaking with individual clients before it finalizes the plan.
