Nokia Buys Mobile Analytics Firm Motally

Mobile phone giant Nokia has agreed to acquire privately-held US-based data collection and analytics firm Motally Inc. Terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2008 in San Francisco, Motally currently employs just eight people. In March, it appointed former Nielsen product management specialist John Forese as CEO. The firm uses patent-pending technology to offer accurate data collection and analytic reporting for mobile sites, including in-application tracking and reporting, to help developers and publishers to optimize the development of their mobile applications. Nokia says it will continue to serve Motally's existing customer base - the platform has been built so far for BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad and Android phones - while adapting the offer for Qt, Symbian, Meego and Java developers.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed this quarter.

Marco Argenti, Nokia's Vice President, Media, says the move underpins its drive to deliver in-application and mobile web browsing analytics to developers and publishers on its Ovi app store, helping them optimize and monetize their offering through better understanding of customers.

Nokia is also planning the release of new high-end handsets including the N8, scheduled for UK launch in September, and the N9 which will reportedly use its new MeeGo platform.
