TNS Gallup Wins Norwegian Radio Contract

September 29 2010

Broadcasting association The Norwegian Radio Industry has awarded TNS Gallup a three-year contract extension to measure electronic radio listening in the country. The contract will now run until late 2013.

Kristian TolonenTNS Gallup has run the project since 2006 using Arbitron's Portable People Meters (PPMs). A panel of 850 people is equipped with PPMs, and their listening habits are tracked across five national radio channels and four regional sales networks. The devices track both digital and analogue radio broadcasts by air, cable, satellite and over the Internet wherever the wearer goes, giving daily updates of listening data.

PPMs are currently used in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Kazakhstan, Norway and the US, and there are approximately 60,000 in use worldwide. Norway was the first country in the world to switch to electronic measurement of radio listening.

'Having made the transition into the new radio market, this is an incredibly exciting time,' comments Kristian Tolonen, Media Researcher at NRK and Chairman of the steering committee for the participating radio companies. 'We're seeing radio listening rise among young people and this will be an exciting trend to monitor in 2010 and 2011.'
