Hywood to Chair Australian Newspaper Body

March 14 2011

In Australia, The Newspaper Works, the print media industry body, has appointed Greg Hywood of Fairfax Media as Chairman. He replaces Brendan Hopkins, former CEO of APN News & Media who retired last year.

Hywood was appointed as Fairfax boss in January. The latest appointment follows the announcement last week that the industry will now report daily on circulation, as opposed to only reporting individual sales on Saturday and Sunday.

Hopkins' place on the Newspaper Works board will be taken by his replacement as APN CEO, Brett Chenoweth.

Hywood said: 'It's a privilege to have been elected chairman of The Newspaper Works and I'm looking forward to working with all our publishers. This is a very exciting era for our industry, with newspaper brands now able to reach wider audiences than ever thanks to their delivery across print, online and mobile digital platforms.'

Newspaper Works CEO Tony Hale said: 'I'm very pleased to congratulate Greg on his election as chairman and to welcome Brett to the board. As highly credentialed new members, they will bring a fresh perspective to the ways in which the newspaper industry presents itself to the advertising community and other key audiences, especially at a time when newspaper brands are rapidly evolving.'

The appointment comes at a time of flux for Australian news media metrics which have been through a divisive tendering process in the last year and a half, culminating in the appointment of Ipsos MediaCT to run the new readership measurement system.
