Rapid Growth for IHS

January 9 2012

US energy and environment intelligence specialist IHS Inc. has reported a 27% increase in revenue for the fourth quarter, to $371m, with organic growth of 9.4 percent; and a 25% rise (8.7% organic) in revenue for the year ended November 30, 2011, to $1.326 billion.

Full year net income was $135.4m, or $2.06 per diluted share, down a fraction from $137.7m the previous year due to discrete pension items, but without these would have increased to $154.2m ($2.35). Adjusted EBITDA for the fourth quarter rose 33% to $119m, and for the year, up 26% to $401m.

Chairman and CEO Jerre Stead said the results were 'a record in all respects, and especially notable in light of the uncertain macroeconomic environment'. He added: '2011 was a historic year for IHS both in terms of the level of investment we made in our infrastructure to create scalable platforms as well as the amount of capital deployed for strategic acquisitions, both of which will enable profitable growth for years to come.'

Business grew in all three operating regions: the Americas rising 23% to $218.5m, EMEA 26% to $109.0m and APAC 49% to $43.2m.

The company says it expects revenue of $1.50 to $1.55bn with organic growth of 7-10% for the year ending November 30, 2012, along with adjusted EBITDA of $480-$495m and adjusted EPS between $3.84 and $4.01.

IHS is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, was established in 1959 and employs more than 5,500 people. The firm provides information and insight for sectors including energy and power; design and supply chain; defense, risk and security; environmental, health and safety (EHS) and sustainability; and commodities.

In November, the company acquired global petrochem advisory and market research firm Purvin & Gertz for an undisclosed sum.
