New Organization Opens for Consumer Demand Prediction

February 23 2012

In New York, Nielsen has teamed up with business membership and research association The Conference Board to launch a non-profit organization called The Demand Institute, with a mission to provide insight into how consumer demand is evolving around the world.

Mark Leiter and Jonathan SpectorAs a member-driven organization, The Demand Institute will help public and private-sector senior executives align their strategies and investments to where consumer demand is headed across industries, countries and markets.

Its remit is to provide members with knowledge to enable them to implement the best practices for leading and managing demand-driven enterprises, while also forecasting how consumer demand is likely to change in the next decade. In addition, the institute will develop technologies and tools for both uncovering and predicting future consumer demand.

Mark Leiter, EVP at Nielsen and Chairman of The Demand Institute, says that consumers around the world are forecast to spend more than $450 trillion during the next decade on goods and services. He comments: 'Understanding precisely how consumer demand is likely to unfold, as well as the forces and factors that will shape demand, is essential knowledge for business and government leaders across both developed and developing markets. The Demand Institute will connect this knowledge to leaders who require these insights to guide their organizations.'

The new venture is headquartered in New York City, with a presence in Beijing, Brussels, Chicago, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Singapore and Washington, D.C.

Jonathan Spector, Conference Board CEO and Vice Chairman of The Demand Institute adds that the launch had been made in response to Board Directors, CEOs and Heads of State, who he says recognize that more accurately aligning businesses and government programs to shifting demand, creates 'new opportunities for prosperity'.
