Arbitron Reports 5.5% Rise in Q1 Revenue

US radio ratings giant Arbitron has reported a 5.5% increase in revenue to $106.4m for the first quarter. Operating income rose 7.4%, to $31.2m, and net income 9.6% to $17.8m.

Bill KerrCosts and expenses for the first quarter 2012 increased by 4.7% to $75.2m. Approximately $2.8m of the increase was due to costs associated with Arbitron Mobile, and to planned investments in cross-platform initiatives. The net pre-tax investment in these two during the first quarter of 2012 was $3.0m, compared with $1.0m in the first quarter last year.

Bill Kerr, President and CEO, commented: 'Our results and our activities in the first quarter are well aligned with our long standing priorities for enhancing our core services and for generating revenue growth. We unveiled our marketing mix modeling service at the recent ARF convention, digital radio remains a key priority, and our cross-platform initiatives continue to demonstrate the value that our technologies can bring to this emerging marketplace. Finally, with the launch of a new, syndicated mobile measurement panel, Arbitron Mobile is moving to expand its footprint here in the US.'

For the full year, the company expects revenue to increase between 5% and 7% over its 2011 revenue of $422.3m, while its cross-platform initiative and Arbitron Mobile are expected to account for $4m to $7m of the company's 2012 revenue, compared with $1.5m in 2011.

Earlier this week in an SEC filing, Arbitron announced that, Kerr had received a total compensation package of $3.26m for 2011, including stocks and other awards.
