Baltimore Ravens Hires Football Analyst

August 9 2012

American football team The Baltimore Ravens has hired Sandy Weil as Director of Football Analytics, to work alongside the player personnel department and coaching staff to study data related to game trends, NFL scouting and player production.

Sandy WeilPrior to joining, Weil (pictured) was a Statistician and Data Architecture Designer at Sportsmetricians Consulting, where he worked with the San Antonio Spurs, analyzing the STATS SportVU Player tracking data and advising on ideas to make SportVU information more useable at the team level. He worked previously as a Senior Energy Analyst with Ascend Analytics, as Project Manager and Data Manager at Wall Street on Demand, and in project management roles with Janus Capital Group, Thomson Financial and Bear Stearns.

In his new position, Weil's studies could cover everything from the benefits of going for a first down on fourth-and-short, to determining the traits that are key indicators of success for an NFL prospect.

Announcing the appointment, General Manager and SVP Ozzie Newsome said: 'We're always looking for confirmation on things we think we know and insights that could provide an edge for us in personnel and coaching. As Sandy learns more about what we do, and we learn more about what he can do with all this information, his role and impact will increase. I'm excited to see where this leads and how it develops.'
