PennWell Buys Energy Sector Data Services

Tulsa, Oklahoma-based media company PennWell Corp. has acquired energy sector database and intelligence services including TransmissionHub and GenerationHub from Colorado-based Energy Central. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PennWell says the acquisition will enhance its growing information and mapping business for the electric power industry. The deal includes TransmissionHub and GenerationHub, which are online intelligence services for those working with electric power infrastructure in North America - covering transmission projects and power plants, respectively. Both include daily and weekly news reports and analysis.

Included within GenerationHub are database and subscription service Fossil Fuels Tracker and the weekly Coal Insider newsletter, and the deal also gives PennWell three regional conferences. Robert F. Biolchini, President and CEO, says the services provide 'robust data, reports and intelligence that will pair perfectly' with his firm's geospatial data for electric power and renewable energy, including its MAPSearch business and online and mobile mapping platform ENvision.

Edward Metz, General Manager of PennWell's MapSearch business, will assume management of the acquired firms.
