Continuum Gets $3m from DARPA XDATA Fund

February 6 2013

Austin, Texas-based big data start-up Continuum Analytics has been awarded $3m from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which it will use to develop new techniques for exploring large, multi-dimensional data sets.

Peter WangContinuum's data analytics products and consulting services enable organizations to analyze, manage and visualize big data. The DARPA funding is part of the US agency's four-year $100m XDATA research program, helping companies develop new computational techniques and open-source software tools for processing and analyzing big data. The program is 'driven by defense needs', but is also applicable across many other government agencies and for civilian purposes.

As part of the program, the Continuum team will work on a new visualization system for interactive visual exploration of large, complex data sets, while also developing the firm's NumPy tool, used as an extension for the widely used Python programming language.

Continuum President Peter Wang (pictured) comments: 'XDATA is a cornerstone of the government's big data initiative. The tools we develop through this project will give DARPA a solid foundation for continued innovation in the rapid analysis and visual exploration of massive, interconnected data from heterogeneous sources.'
