Westminster Uni Opens Social Media Centre

In London, the University of Westminster has launched a Centre for Social Media Research (CSMR), through which it will conduct research into the social, cultural and political-economic aspects of social media, while exploring how it might transform the practice of research.

Professor David Gauntlett and Professor Christian FuchsThe centre will be led by Professor David Gauntlett, who joined the university in 2006 and also co-directs its Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI). Earlier in his career, Gauntlett taught at the University of Leeds, and served as Professor of Media and Audiences at Bournemouth University.

Westminster has also introduced a new Master's degree in Social Media, which will be led by Professor Christian Fuchs and Professor Graham Meikle, and will welcome its first students in September.

Fuchs comments: 'Social media is a new frontier in theory and research. The Centre for Social Media Research is a leading environment for analysing the implications of social media for society, while the new MA in Social Media will be based on research-inspired teaching conducted by leading scholars in this exciting interdisciplinary field of inquiry.'
