TNS Opens for Business in Burma

TNS has officially opened an office in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma), claiming to be the first international consumer insights consultancy to secure a licence to officially conduct business in the country.

The new TNS Myanmar operation will be led by Jason Copland (pictured), who previously co-founded Yangon-based Compass Research with Lyndal Pearce. Pearce has recently been appointed by TNS sister firm Millward Brown to open its office in Myanmar.

Copland and Pearce set up qual/quant agency Compass in 1997, and provided qual, quant and desk services in the country for the next eleven years. Copland says that during this time, he was the first researcher to conduct in-depth studies on child protection and child welfare across the country. More recently, he served as Research Director at Cimigo in Vietnam, prior to which he held the same title at Indochina Research, and he was Customised Research Project Director for Roy Morgan Research in Australia.

Since joining TNS last October, Copland has been recruiting a full service team of client service, fieldwork, operations and qualitative staff based in Yangon. In his new role, he reports to Ralf Matthaes, MD of TNS Indochina and Myanmar, who comments: 'I'm delighted to formalise our business in this country. We have a strong heritage of helping clients grow their business across Indochina and this experience will greatly benefit our clients in Myanmar.'

TNS has recently conducted a consumer study in Myanmar - based on interviews with 11,000 people in twelve locations across the country - in order to offer an in-depth perspective on attitudes and preferences at a category and brand level.
