Guardian Marketer Becomes Deputy CEO

December 17 2013

David Pemsel, Guardian News and Media's former Chief Commercial Officer, has been promoted to Deputy CEO, tasked with expanding UK services including marketing and audience insight, advertising and sales.

David PemselPemsel takes up his new role with more than twenty years' marketing, creative and media industry experience. Before joining The Guardian in 2010, he served as Group Marketing Director at ITV, where he introduced the broadcaster's first brand structure, customer segmentation, and ROI/KPI analysis. While there, he joined the Boards of Freeview and trade association Thinkbox and he was a member of the ITV plc Executive Board. Earlier, he helped launch the content division at Elizabeth Murdoch's Shine Entertainment, was Managing Partner at St Luke's Communications, and was a Group Account Director at Ogilvy & Mather.

He takes up his new role as Guardian US CEO Michael Bloom prepares to leave the company. Pemsel will now have responsibility for all the publisher's commercial operations, including Australia, the US and the UK, and he will work to integrate the teams in all three countries into one operation. In addition, he is responsible for growing Guardian Jobs, Guardian Labs, consumer revenues, membership, and commercial delivery in the US and Australia.

Tony Danker has also been promoted, to Director, International and Partnerships, to lead further international expansion.

Both will report to Guardian Media Group CEO Andrew Miller, who comments: 'I believe David Pemsel will be able to maximise the huge potential we see in both the US and Australia, while Tony Danker will be able to create new opportunities and partnerships for us around the world.'

According to a statement, Bloom will stay on in his role until the end of January 2014 before leaving 'to pursue other opportunities'.
