CASRO Publishes New Code

September 8 2014

US research association CASRO has formalised its new Code of Standards and Ethics, after its approval by more than two-thirds of member companies.

Peter MillaA draft was prepared by a Task Force chaired by the organisation's guidelines and technical consultant Peter Milla (pictured), then reviewed and revised over several months. Key revisions in the new code are:

  • inclusion of a set of 'Principles for Market, Opinion, and Social Research', shared with other national and international research associations including the 38 national orgs who form the Global Research Business Network (GRBN)
  • new terminology including 'participants', which replaces 'respondents' in some cases, given the rise of online and observational research. Research participation can now be 'active' or 'passive'.
  • renewed emphasis on transparency with participants and the need for informed consent and respect for privacy
  • new content on researching 'Children, Young People, and Other Vulnerable Populations', and
  • a new section on 'Special Considerations for Online and Mobile Research', replacing that on 'Internet Research' and focusing on email and text message solicitation standards.
CASRO President Diane Bowers said of the new release: 'We were pleased to receive so many thoughtful comments and suggestions during the revision and voting process. It affirms to us that the CASRO Code is an important credential for our members and the research industry, and that it is, indeed, a 'living document' that is both responsive and principled.'
