e-Receipt Specialist Slice Debuts Panel Business

September 26 2014

Palo Alto, California-based online shopping data app Slice has launched an analytics business, Slice Intelligence, which makes use of a panel of more than 2 million online shoppers.

Slice's technology automatically identifies e-receipts in email inboxes and extracts 'every data point about every purchase'.

Distancing itself from the 'relatively small panels' of other providers, the firm says its service is unique in measuring 'digital commerce directly from the consumer, across all retailers, at the item level, over time.' This involves detailed information from hundreds of millions of aggregated and anonymized e-receipts, mapping 'each and every consumer to all their purchases.' Online retailers, says Slice, 'know everything about their own customers' purchase behavior and preferences, but fly blind once those customers shop elsewhere.'

Founder and CEO Scott Brady comments: 'Slice was founded, funded and acquired based on the value of the purchase data we are able to capture using our machine-learning technology. The depth and breadth of commerce we measure is an order of magnitude above what has ever been seen, and before today's launch, eluded the market research industry. We've brought together the best in the measurement business to transform Slice's big data into actionable insights, at a level of speed and detail that fundamentally changes what the industry can learn about shopping behavior.'

The new division released sample data about purchases of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus: 85 percent of those who pre-ordered a device on the first weekend of sale upgraded from a previous iPhone, with fully two-thirds upgrading from an iPhone 5, 5s or 5c.

Slice is an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of Rakuten and the new business is online at www.sliceintelligence.com .
