New Aboriginal and Torres Strait Advisers for Ipsos

August 3 2016

In Australia, Ipsos has set up an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group, to oversee all research and evaluation conducted by its recently formed Indigenous Research Unit.

Professor Michael Dodson and Professor Maggie WalterLaunched in February in partnership with indigenous research company Winangali, the unit is part of the Ipsos Social Research Institute and conducts culturally sensitive research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Since its formation, the unit has been commissioned to undertake several large research projects for both federal and state governments, and has completed a reconciliation action plan to demonstrate its commitment to working with 'first nations' people.

The new Advisory Group has been set up to represent the diversity among these communities in Australia, each with its own mixture of cultures, customs and laws, and more than 120 surviving languages. It is co-chaired by ANU's Professor Michael Dodson and Professor Maggie Walter from the University of Tasmania (pictured), and members include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a diverse knowledge of culture and understanding of ethical guidelines to support and share knowledge with Ipsos. Four Ipsos staff - CEO Simon Wake, Public Affairs MD Mark Davis, Director of Public Affairs, Queensland Kylie Brosnan, and Research Manager Julia Knapp - also sit on the Advisory Group.

Wake comments: 'Our vision for the unit is to increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander economic participation through employment opportunities, procurement spend and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers and organisations. Economic participation is an essential step towards improving life outcomes and empowering these people, and their families and communities in Australia'.
