Launch for Nielsen's Social Media Ratings

August 3 2016

Nielsen has launched its Social Content Ratings service, announced in January as a replacement for Twitter TV Ratings, and providing a measure of program-related social media activity across both Facebook and Twitter.

Sean CaseyThe service, announced in January, plans to incorporate Instagram insights at a later date. Its predecessor, Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings was launched in 2012 and measured total audience for social media TV activity - both those participating in the conversation and those only seeing it. The new Social Content Ratings expands on the service, and marks the first time that social media TV insights across Facebook and Twitter are measured with a standardized, third-party methodology, and shared with the industry.

The new service uses a set of more than one million classifier combinations - program-related terms, including accounts, handles, hashtags, talent names and other phrases associated with programs - to measure organic and owned activity on Facebook and Twitter in a standardized way. These classifiers are identified and applied to measure relevant social media activity when a program is airing, and on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week basis. In addition, Nielsen receives topic data directly from Facebook and accesses APIs from Twitter in order to measure total social media TV activity across social media networks; and measures both public social media activity and activity taking place between friends.

Sean Casey (pictured), President, Nielsen Social, comments: 'With social media playing an increasing role in consumers' lives and TV experiences, its value for the media industry continues to mature. We are excited to introduce Social Content Ratings as the first standardized measure for Social TV that networks, agencies, and advertisers can trust for TV planning and informing strategies across social networks'.
