IAB Launches Privacy Lab Service

Regional digital ad industry association IAB Europe and the global organisation's R&D and standard-setting consortium IAB Tech Lab have extended their partnership to launch the IAB Privacy Lab, which will help members develop standards for privacy, data protection and compliance.

The Privacy Lab will serve national IAB members in regions that are considering or have adopted new privacy laws, allowing them to identify which consumer rights and company obligations their local laws require, so they can be incorporated into local-level standards and technology frameworks. In addition, the service will offer support and guidance to members, including legal and policy experts.

Two years ago, IAB Tech Lab acquired the assets of non-profit industry consortium DigiTrust, whose technology and services provided additional infrastructure for the GDPR Transparency and Consent Framework, an initiative led by IAB Europe, IAB Tech Lab and their members. More recently, the two organisations launched the Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF); an industry tool that helps advertisers manage their compliance obligations under the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive. The Privacy Lab will use the TCF in jurisdictions where the privacy laws are similar to GDPR, and is also working with IAB (US), while a TCF pilot has been rolled out in Canada.

Townsend Feehan, IAB Europe CEO, says the aim of the Privacy Lab is to provide a low-cost way of achieving efficiencies for corporate members, while respecting local differences. Tech Lab President Dennis Buchheim adds: 'The new IAB Privacy Lab will draw on the respective strengths of Tech Lab and IAB Europe, with Tech Lab leveraging its broad industry network of product leaders and engineers and its track record in creating global technical standards for digital advertising, and IAB Europe contributing its deep expertise in privacy policy and legal compliance'.
