Nations at the Movies

April 1 2004

The homes of Hollywood and Bollywood top the list of 15 movie-going nations covered by the latest TGI data. Thirty-two per cent of Americans and twenty-eight per cent of Indians have been to the cinema at least once in the last month. Around 4% of all Americans went at least four times in the last month - representing around 8.3 million movie fanatics.

Sweden and Mexico are next, also with more than a quarter of people having been to the cinema in the last month. In Mexico 77% of people who have been to the movies in the last month most frequently go to see US-made films compared with 12% who favour domestic or other Latin American films.

China and the three Eastern European countries covered prop up the table. Uniquely, less than a third of people in Poland agreed with the statement 'I enjoy seeing films at the cinema more than on TV'.

Despite the variation in overall levels of movie attendance some results are consistent across the world - for example the core audience is young people. This is particularly marked in the Asia Pacific region: in Singapore an impressive 52% of people aged 18-24 have been to the movies in the last month compared with 3% of people aged over 55, and in Hong Kong the figure is 40% for the younger age group compared with just 1% of people over 55.

Favourite movie genres are also fairly standard - in all of the countries analyzed, either comedy or action adventure is the most popular choice. Of those people in the US that have been to the movies in the last month, 72% stated that the last movie they saw was a comedy.
