Poynter and Son Launch Word Cloud Plus

January 5 2023

Ubiquitous MR industry figure Ray Poynter has teamed up with his son, engineer Will Poynter, to offer a new, free tool for creating word clouds. Users get a draft cloud which they can then refine to change layout, exclude or accentuate particular words or phrases, and other options.

Ray and Will PoynterIn addition to allowing users to thus 'choose and configure the algorithm to match the questions being asked by the researcher and the text data being analyzed', Word Cloud Plus provides them with a summary of the text, showing the frequency and scores for the word, bigrams and trigrams, and when a word in the cloud is clicked will show all occurrences of it in the text file.

43-year industry veteran Ray Poynter is the founder of The Future Place and its #NewMR project / LinkedIn group; has worked at The Research Business, IntelliQuest, Millward Brown, Virtual Surveys and Potentiate - and consulted for Colmar Brunton and Vision Critical. He is also a former member of the ESOMAR council; frequent conference speaker and event chair; lecturer on business, MR, marketing and insight at Nottingham Trent University; and the author of a number of handbooks and guides for the profession. University of Manchester graduate Will Poynter has served as CTO at Research Through Gaming and in lead engineering roles at Babylon Health and UCL Institute of Education, in addition to spells at NewMR and The Future Place.

Ray says of their joint venture: 'Lots of people seem to be using word clouds. Many of these clouds are significantly underwhelming. So, we decided to produce something which leverages the intelligence of the user to create a better result'.
