CEO Steps Down at Publisher Wiley

October 11 2023

New Jersey-based research and education publishing company Wiley has announced that its President and CEO Brian Napack is stepping down from the roles, to be replaced immediately as Chief Exec on an interim basis by Matthew Kissner, who has taken the interim role once before.

Matthew KissnerWiley was founded in 1807 and nowadays describes itself as 'a global leader in research, publishing and knowledge solutions... dedicated to the creation and application of knowledge'.

Kissner previously served as Wiley's Group Executive and Board Chair, as well as Interim CEO from May to December 2017. In June this year Napack and Wiley's executive leadership announced a value creation plan focusing the business on its strongest and most profitable activities, divesting non-core assets, and rightsizing and streamlining the company: Kissner will proceed with this plan, work on developing the next generation of leadership for the company, and aim to manage a smooth transition to a new leader.

Board Chair Jesse Wiley says Kissner has a deep understanding of the company's markets, operations and people, and adds: He is well-positioned to hit the ground running as we advance our plans to materially improve profitability and performance and drive consistent growth in the years to come'. Of the departing Napack he says, 'The Board thanks Brian for his six years of contributions and hard work. He and Wiley's leadership team led the company during a period of rapid change and market disruption including the pandemic. As a result, Wiley is now a more focused company poised for great success'.

Kissner says 'Wiley is in a great position as a market leader in Research with strong competitive moats, including must have journal brands, platforms and audience networks, along with a strong balance sheet and solid cash flow'.
