SSI Asian Expansion

December 6 2004

Just two and a half weeks after announcing a new venture in Australia Survey Sampling International (SSI) has announced a partnership with Larry Greenberg of Tokyo-based Urban Connections to establish and rapidly expand a new Representative Office in Japan.

Japan's economy is once again growing fast after the 'lost decade' of the 1990s, and the Japanese MR industry is growing rapidly, with total spending for market research in 2003 at US$1.1 billion, up 6% from the previous year, according to figures from the Japan Marketing Research Association (JMRA).

Greenberg says that on visiting SSI's headquarters in the spring, 'I immediately realized that SSI's advanced proprietary techniques are a full generation ahead of those used in Japan'. He expects a 'huge leap forward' for SSI Japan in 2005 given the country's reputation as 'a fast follower of expert practices'.

Greenberg will use Urban Connections' business development services and large network of contacts in central and local government to assist in the launch of SSI's advanced sampling products and services.

Greenberg is a native of Brooklyn, New York, who moved to Japan after obtaining a degree in International Relations from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1985, and founded Urban Connections in 1990.
