Aus / NZ Jobseekers Confident for the Year Ahead

Employees in Australia and New Zealand are optimistic about 2005, with around four in five feeling that their current job is safe and two thirds that they could find another job quickly if they did lose it, according to the latest poll by Roy Morgan.

New Zealanders (85%) are more likely to feel their current job is safe than Australians (79%) although both figures are up 1% on last year. 24% of Australians think the number of unemployed at a national level will fall, and 40% that it will stay the same in 2005, while 36% think it will rise - the last figure is down 3%. In New Zealand, both the starting point and the improvement are more positive, with 29% predicting a fall, 42% saying it will stay the same/unable to say and 29% (down from 35% last year) expecting unemployment to rise.

Sixty-seven per cent of Australians and 69% of New Zealanders say that if they became unemployed they feel they would be able to find another job quickly.

Morgan interviewed 602 Australians aged 14 by telephone on November 24/25 and 974 New Zealanders aged 14 or over, also by telephone, between November 24-30. The agency's web site is at www.roymorgan.com
