Arise Sir Bob (II)

February 10 2005

Britain has a new Sir Bob, not as charmingly dishevelled as Mr Geldof but extraordinary nonetheless. MORI founder and Chairman Robert M. Worcester has been honoured with a KBE 'in recognition of outstanding services ...to political social and economic research' and for his 'contribution to government policy and programmes'.

Worcester, now Sir Robert, came to Britain from America in 1969 to set up MORI, now one of the world's top 20 agencies. In 2004, he became a British subject after being selected as a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Kent, in which he holds many positions including Kent Ambassador appointed by the County Council, Non-Executive Director of Kent Messenger Group and both Governor and Honorary Professor of the University of Kent.

His academic positions and honours also include Governor of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and an Honorary Professor at Warwick University. He holds four honorary degrees.

Sir Robert is Chairman of the Pilgrims Society, a Governor of the English-Speaking Union, and a Trustee of the Magna Carta Trust. He is a Freeman of the City of London, a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation and a Member of the Fulbright Commission. Political assignments include Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee of the United Nations Association and of the European Atlantic Group.

A keen supporter of British wildlife and environmental charities, he is President of ENCAMS (Keep Britain Tidy), a Vice President of the Royal Society for Nature Conservation/Wildlife Trusts, a Trustee of WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) and a former Trustee of WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature).

MORI's Chief Executive Brian Gosschalk comments: 'All of us at MORI are delighted our Chairman has been honoured. Bob has been a tireless champion of high quality research for more than 35 years since founding MORI. This is a fitting tribute to his huge contribution to market and opinion research in the UK, as well as to public policy'.

For the record, Sir Robert is officially 'Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire'.
