Steady Growth of Internet News

April 27 2005

US adults are gradually increasing their use of the Internet as a news source. The number citing it as their main source of news has grown from 19% in 2001 to 26% now, according to JupiterResearch. TV and newspapers are the sources replaced.

While the percentage of online adults using the Internet (at all) for daily news had been flat - hovering around 50% - for the last few years, and usage for local news is showing little growth, young adults (ages 18 to 24) are driving a trend in sourcing of national news. Thirty-three percent of online young adults say they prefer the Internet as their primary source of news, while 40% prefer TV and 10% newspapers.

'In the face of relatively flat usage, this increasing preference for the Internet is intriguing', says David Card, VP and Senior Analyst at Jupiter. 'While traditional media companies like The New York Times and CNN are doing very well online, our analysis shows that brands like AOL and Yahoo! are increasingly important for online audiences'.

JupiterResearch surveyed more than 10,750 online adults over the course of four years for the report 'Online Local Content: Prioritizing Content, Blogs, and Community'. The complete findings are available to its clients online, via the web site at www.jupiterresearch.com
