IMS Buys PharMetrics

IMS Health has announced a definitive agreement to acquire business intelligence provider PharMetrics, Inc., specialist in patient-centric integrated claims data. The terms were not disclosed.

PharMetrics, which employs around 75 people in Watertown, Mass, tracks the health history of, and treatments delivered to approximately 55 million anonymised health plan participants. The resulting market insights are used by government institutions, major employers, managed care organizations and pharmaceutical companies.

David R. Carlucci, IMS CEO and President, says the combination will provide 'a greatly enhanced understanding of how medical and pharmaceutical interventions come together to impact health outcomes', adding: 'Longitudinal patient-centered insights are key to advancing evidence-based healthcare'.

Michael Weintraub, PharMetrics President and CEO says the healthcare industry 'faces significant challenges and requires innovative new approaches. Together, we will be well- positioned to help these stakeholders better understand the impact of pharmaceutical products and other medical interventions on the quality and cost of healthcare'.
