Australian Partnership Promotes Sensory Research

Food Science Australia and Sydney-based consumer agency Sensory Solutions have announced a partnership to offer enhanced tools, standards and training for market research for the country's food industry.

Standards and training offerings will be developed jointly over the next few years. Food Science Australia, a joint venture of CSIRO and the Victorian Government, offers expertise in objective sensory and analytical flavour research, and has access to leading food researchers with skills in food processing, packaging, storage and distribution. The partnership will make use of Sensory Solutions' specialist analytical tools as well as its long experience in the area.

According to Dr David Tanner, Centre Director at Food Science Australia: 'The sensory characteristics of food - appearance, smell, taste and texture - are fundamental in influencing consumer preference and choice. The food industry is witnessing a convergence between the traditional supply-driven market and an emerging consumer-driven market... [in which] food manufacturers must fully understand these characteristics and provide consumers with a diverse choice of foods that deliver maximum eating pleasure'.

Sensory Solutions MD Paul Squires says the combination of Food Science Australia's technical know-how and Sensory Solutions' commercial expertise makes the new relationship agreement 'an important milestone in advancing sensory research in Australia'.
