Technical Innovations in Arbitron PPM Trial

Arbitron is demonstrating new Portable People Meters (PPMs) which automatically distinguish between in-home and out-of-home viewing and listening, as well as detecting recorded programmes. The panel, based in Houston, represents the diverse local market, with 20% black and 31% Hispanic members.

Innovations introduced for the trial include automatic detection and measurement of time-shifted viewing and listening via digital recorders and VCRs. Data from the trial will be released in September, and then every month through the winter.

Pierre Bouvard, President, of Portable People Meter and International said: 'Arbitron went to Houston to demonstrate our ability to recruit a PPM panel in an ethnically diverse market, and further demonstrate that Hispanic and Black/African-American consumers will participate in a PPM media panel. Our recruiting success was consistent across key ethnic and racial groups.'

'We believe Arbitron has delivered a nearly passive, multimedia ratings panel that will stand up to the scrutiny of the radio and television industry and the Media Ratings Council, which is currently auditing our PPM operations in Houston,' said Jay Guyther, Senior VP of Portable People Meter.
